LEYTE: Calubian Declares Class Suspension on October 6, 2026 for World Teachers’ Day Celebration

The Municipal Government of Calubian, Leyte has suspended classes at all levels in both public and private schools on October 6, 2026, through Executive Order No. 84, Series of 2026, as part of the municipality’s observance of World Teachers’ Day and recognition of the contributions of teachers and non-teaching personnel.

CALUBIAN, LEYTE — In a heartfelt recognition of the invaluable contributions of educators, the Municipal Government of Calubian, led by Mayor Hon. Marciano A. Batiancela Jr., has issued Executive Order No. 84, Series of 2026, declaring the suspension of classes at all levels public and private on October 6, 2026, in observance of World Teachers’ Day.

The order, signed on October 1, 2026, cites the municipality’s deep appreciation for teachers as the architects of the youth’s minds and character, whose work forms the foundation of community and national progress. It notes that while World Teachers’ Day is globally observed every October 5, the local government has designated the following day to give all teaching and non-teaching personnel a well-deserved break and an opportunity to participate in community-wide celebrations.

“It is but fitting to provide a day of rest and celebration for all teachers and non-teaching personnel in recognition of their noble service to the community and society,” the executive order states.

The suspension applies to all schools, from early education to tertiary levels, throughout the municipality. Local officials emphasized that the measure is more than just a holiday it is a gesture of gratitude toward the men and women who help shape the future of Calubian.

Schools are encouraged to hold special programs, tributes, and appreciation activities either before or after the holiday to honor their faculty and staff. Residents and parents are also urged to join in recognizing the dedication, commitment, and sacrifices of educators throughout the town.

World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated internationally since 1994 to commemorate the adoption of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. In Calubian, this year’s observance takes on added significance as the entire community pauses to honor its educators with a day dedicated to them.

World Teachers’ Day 2026: Philippines Joins Global Celebration Honoring Educators

Teachers around the world will take center stage on October 5, 2026, as communities, schools, and educational institutions mark World Teachers’ Day, with the Philippines also observing its National Teachers’ Day on the same date.

This year’s celebration carries special significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, an international framework that established standards concerning teachers’ rights and responsibilities, professional preparation, recruitment, employment, and working conditions. UNESCO has chosen the theme “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

The 2026 observance comes at a time when the teaching profession continues to face significant changes. UNESCO has highlighted challenges involving digital technologies, climate change, inclusion, migration, and displacement, as well as concerns surrounding teachers’ professional recognition, autonomy, support, workload, and working conditions. The organization says the celebration is an opportunity not only to honor teachers but also to consider what is needed to protect and strengthen the profession for the future.

At the global level, UNESCO, together with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International, will hold the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. The event will bring together teachers, education officials, policymakers, academics, young people, teacher organizations, and other education stakeholders for discussions focused on the status and future of the teaching profession.

The Paris celebration will also feature the presentation of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development, along with discussions on ways to protect and advance the teaching profession. UNESCO says the event is intended to recognize teachers’ contributions while drawing attention to the conditions and support necessary for them to perform their roles effectively.

In the Philippines, October 5 carries additional national significance. Republic Act No. 10743, approved on January 29, 2016, formally declares the fifth day of October every year as National Teachers’ Day. The law directs government agencies, local government units, and private employers to provide opportunities for employees to participate in activities celebrating the occasion, with the Department of Education designated as the lead agency for the annual program.

The national observance also serves as the culmination of National Teachers’ Month, which runs annually from September 5 to October 5 under Presidential Proclamation No. 242. The month-long celebration is intended to recognize the contributions of teachers to families, communities, and national development.

For 2026, the Department of Education is carrying out the celebration under the theme “Teacher, Ikaw Naman!”, emphasizing recognition and appreciation for educators after years of giving their time, knowledge, patience, and care to generations of learners. DepEd officially launched the 2026 National Teachers’ Month on September 5 in Cagayan de Oro City, with educators and education officials gathering for the nationwide opening.

The national culminating activity is scheduled for October 5 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, bringing the month-long celebration to a close as the country joins the international observance of World Teachers’ Day.

Across Philippine schools, the occasion provides an opportunity for students, parents, school administrators, and communities to express their appreciation for teachers whose responsibilities extend far beyond classroom instruction. Teachers guide learners through academic challenges, help develop values and character, and often serve as important figures in their communities.

The celebration also places attention on the people behind the profession. While teachers are frequently recognized for their role in educating children and young people, the 2026 global theme emphasizes that supporting teachers requires more than expressions of gratitude. It also involves recognizing their professional status, listening to their voices, and ensuring conditions that allow them to carry out their responsibilities.

UNESCO notes that teachers who are properly trained, supported, and valued are essential to achieving quality education for all. At the same time, the organization has warned of a global shortage of teachers and emphasized the need for policies that can attract, prepare, and retain qualified educators.

For Filipino educators, October 5, 2026, therefore represents more than a commemorative date. It is a day when the country joins a global conversation about the importance of teachers while celebrating their contributions to generations of learners.

From classrooms in cities to schools in remote communities, teachers continue to occupy a central place in the education system. World Teachers’ Day provides a moment to recognize that contribution and, in the spirit of the 2026 theme, to stand with teachers as they help shape the future of education and society.
